Project insights

Delta Built Environment Consultants (Delta BEC) was appointed to identify and evaluate suitable land along the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) coastline for the development of a commercial aquaculture farming project focusing on Nile Tilapia and freshwater prawn production. The objective was to assess opportunities and constraints in line with national and provincial policies and lay the foundation for a sustainable, regulation-compliant aquaculture operation.

The project began with an inception meeting to clarify objectives, deliverables, and stakeholder expectations. This was followed by a thorough legislative and policy review specific to aquaculture development in KZN, ensuring alignment with environmental, agricultural, and spatial planning frameworks.

Delta BEC conducted site visits and employed GIS mapping to identify and assess macro-sites based on environmental suitability, accessibility, and infrastructure potential. A two-phase evaluation process was used to refine site selections and develop conceptual layouts tailored to the infrastructure and operational needs of aquaculture facilities.

Benchmarking studies and stakeholder consultations further informed the analysis, enabling Delta BEC to deliver a practical, well-rounded strategy to guide the future development of aquaculture farming along the KZN coast.
