Project insights
Delta Built Environment Consultants (Delta BEC) was appointed by Geo-Soil and Water on behalf of Mokala Manganese Mine to compile a detailed engineering design for the Stormwater Management Plan (SWMP) to support their water use license application (WULA). Mokala is an existing opencast manganese mine located northwest of Hotazel in the Joe Morolong Local Municipality of the Northern Cape Province.
In the first phase of this project, a 65 000 m³ HDPE-lined pollution control dam (PCD) was constructed, complete with concrete inlet works, a silt trap, an overflow structure, and a leak detection system. The next phase involved the implementation of a network of run-off management channels and culverts across the mine to manage stormwater effectively and ensure environmental compliance. Delta BEC’s engineering expertise was vital in optimising the mine’s water management systems for sustainable operations.
