Project insights

Delta Built Environment Consultants (Delta BEC) was appointed to conduct an optimisation study for the Pool Workshop Facility at the Grootegeluk Complex, which is responsible for the repair and maintenance of the mine’s fleet, excluding heavy-duty vehicles. This study focused on fleet management, repair and maintenance practices, and facility control, aiming to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the operations within the 10-bay facility.

The project was executed in three phases. Phase 1 involved a comprehensive Fleet Investigation, assessing fleet management systems and allocation models, and identifying underutilised vehicles. Phase 2 focused on repair and maintenance studies, evaluating the adequacy of vehicle bays and lifts, maintenance scheduling practices, workshop processes, manpower compliance, critical spare parts requirements, and overall equipment efficiency.

Recommendations were made to improve training, optimise storage utilisation, implement structured parking, and assess the feasibility of establishing mobile repair teams, among other areas. Phase 3 focused on facility control investigations, evaluating safety and operational support elements such as fencing, lighting, ventilation, and the potential use of additional workshops for specialised vehicles. This comprehensive analysis provided final recommendations for optimising and expanding the Pool Workshop Facility.
