Project insights
The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) appointed Delta Built Environment Consultants (Delta BEC) to design and oversee the expansion of the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital Burns Unit and operating theatre. This project rolls out in two phases:
-
Phase 1:
- Construction of a new utilities building to house relocated substation equipment and 1.5 MVA standby generators—enabling the demolition of the existing substation and generator buildings on-site.
-
Phase 2:
- Extension of the Adult Burns Unit and addition of a new operating theatre in the existing theatre complex.
Delta BEC’s Scope of Services includes:
- Planning & Design: From initial concept through detailed engineering (including specifications, bills of quantities, and NEC contract procurement documents).
- Electrical Services:
- New MV switchgear, transformer, and main LV panel in the utilities building.
- Relocation and commissioning of two 1.5 MVA standby generators with control systems and changeover panels.
- Installation of small power and lighting, dedicated circuits for specialised medical equipment, lightning and surge protection, and advanced UPS solutions (including isolated power supplies for ICU/theatre).
- Construction Supervision: Bi-weekly site inspections, progress meetings, and payment certification.
- Handover & Close-out: Coordinating final testing, commissioning, and project completion.
By integrating robust electrical infrastructure with state-of-the-art hospital design, Delta BEC is helping create a modern, patient-focused environment that enhances critical care services at Africa’s largest hospital.
