Project insights
Delta Built Environment Consultants (Delta BEC) was appointed by Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) for a two-pronged project that included a traffic study aimed at decongesting the upper and lower frontage roads at O.R. Tambo International Airport. In addition, ACSA required the development of a public transport-focused mini precinct plan for airport ground staff members. The objective was to enhance the functionality of the precinct while accommodating various users, including tourists, ground staff, and hotel guests, all within a sustainable and practical framework.
In response to these requirements, Delta BEC delivered a comprehensive set of services. Our team conducted a thorough status quo analysis to understand urban dynamics and how ground staff interacted with the area. We developed strategic interventions that optimised commercial potential and identified retail opportunities for both existing informal tenants and future formal tenants. Our services also included assessing service and utility requirements, ensuring a safe car impound lot, enhancing taxi pick-up and drop-off capability, and proposing sustainable, long-term interventions. Additionally, we created optimised concept design layouts and a 3D artistic impression of the precinct, along with urban design principles and guidelines to support the project vision.
