Project insights

The South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL) appointed Delta Built Environment Consultants (Delta BEC) to provide consulting engineering services for the reseal of National Route N1, Section 29, between Louis Trichardt and Musina in the Limpopo Province. This project forms part of SANRAL’s ongoing programme to maintain and enhance South Africa’s national road network.

Delta BEC carried out a full assessment of the existing pavement conditions, including visual surveys, pavement data reviews, and lifecycle cost evaluations of multiple resurfacing options. A 20 mm Ultra-Thin Friction Course (UTFC) was selected as the optimal solution to improve durability, skid resistance, and overall road performance. Prior to resealing, essential repairs, such as base and surface patching, edge break repairs, texture correction, and edge beam installations, were completed to restore the pavement structure.

The team’s responsibilities included detailed design review, preparation of tender documentation, full-time construction supervision, and comprehensive contract administration. Delta BEC ensured that all works complied with national specifications and sound engineering practice, while also supporting local economic development through the inclusion of several small, medium, and micro-enterprises (SMMEs).

Through its integrated approach, Delta BEC contributed to extending the service life of this critical transport corridor, improving safety and reliability for road users travelling between Louis Trichardt and Musina.
