Project insights
Delta Built Environment Consultants (Delta BEC) was appointed by Lanseria International Airport to lead the complete design and construction supervision of a new 3,000 m long, 45 m wide runway, marking a major milestone in the airport’s expansion and modernisation efforts.
Delta BEC’s scope included the full civil design of the runway geometry and structure, advanced pavement engineering, stormwater drainage, airfield ground lighting, and runway paint markings. Additional work involved the design of the perimeter road, air traffic forecasting, environmental impact assessments, and simulations, including auto-turn and aero-turn. Runway friction and International Roughness Index (IRI) testing were also conducted.
The project incorporated Instrument Landing System (ILS) Category I equipment, along with PAPI, VOR/DME, and NDB navigation aids to support safe operations in low-visibility and night-time conditions. The runway was delivered with minimal disruption to airport operations and significantly enhances Lanseria’s capacity for 24-hour activity, reinforcing its strategic role as a key regional hub and viable alternative to O.R. Tambo International Airport.
Delta BEC’s integrated and forward-thinking engineering approach ensured the delivery of a robust, compliant, and future-ready airfield asset that supports South Africa’s growing aviation demands.
