Project insights
Delta Built Environment Consultants (Delta BEC) was appointed as a subcontractor to Worley Parsons for the design and implementation of various critical components of St. Helena Airport, one of the world’s most isolated air travel facilities. Situated 1900 km from the African coast, with a population of just 4000, the island’s only connection, the RMS St. Helena, was set to be discontinued in 2016. The new airport aimed to address socio-economic challenges by enhancing tourism and reducing emigration. The project encompassed the construction of a 1850-metre concrete runway capable of accommodating aircraft such as the Airbus A319 and Boeing 737-800, along with a terminal building, air traffic control facilities, bulk fuel installations, and a 14 km access road, all located at Prosperous Bay Plain.
As part of the project, Delta BEC provided several services, including designing the Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) system, which featured runway edge lights, approach lighting, and taxiway guidance systems. Delta BEC coordinated with a specialist PANS-OPS design company to prepare instrument flight procedures while also designing the airfield fuel facility to ensure safe operation protocols. The geometry of the runway and taxiway was planned meticulously to facilitate aircraft movement, considering the site’s challenging topography. Additionally, Delta BEC managed the design of a fire training simulator and compiled a safeguarding manual for navigation and communication equipment. St. Helena Airport officially received its Aerodrome Certificate in May 2016, marking a significant milestone for the island’s connectivity and development.
