Project insights

Delta Built Environment Consultants (Delta BEC) has been appointed by the National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS) to enhance the clinical sample transport capabilities, ensuring reliable service delivery for healthcare clients and improving the quality of life for the populations served. The NHLS services over 350 facilities, including clinics and hospitals, utilising more than 60 vehicles to transport samples to 19 laboratories for processing. This project achieved significant improvements, including over a 40% reduction in distance travelled while maintaining operational parameters such as service frequencies and operational time windows.

Delta BEC’s services included the development of a baseline routing model to evaluate the current operational routing system and the identification of errors and limitations. Delta BEC also worked on the specification of a centralised planning and visibility platform (CPVP) to enhance the monitoring and management of routing operations.

Additionally, Delta BEC provided recommendations for optimising the static route network, offering detailed metrics such as total network kilometres and hours, number of collections, and cost comparisons between the baseline and optimised systems.
