Project insights

Ethiopian Airlines initiated a major infrastructure upgrade to meet the growing demand for cargo transport, especially agricultural exports. The airline commenced with a project for the design and construction of Cargo Terminal 2 and the expansion of the apron at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa.

Delta BEC was actively involved in the planning and design of the new cargo terminal, contributing to the overall layout, infrastructure coordination, and integration with existing and future facilities. This included ensuring seamless connectivity with Cargo Terminal 1 and accommodating the future development of Cargo Terminal 3 while addressing operational efficiency, cargo flow, and infrastructure resilience. The new terminal added an additional 600 000 tonnes of annual cargo handling capacity, with dedicated facilities for both perishable and dry goods.

To overcome the challenges posed by the site’s hilly terrain, the project involved extensive earthworks and infrastructure upgrades. Key support services included installing a 24-hour potable water storage system, a wastewater treatment plant, an oil-water separator, and a comprehensive stormwater management system.

The completed development features a fully equipped cargo terminal, apron, office block, canteen, and supporting infrastructure such as electrical substations and water treatment facilities. These enhancements now enable secure, streamlined, and efficient handling of both import and export cargo, reinforcing Bole International Airport’s status as a key logistics hub in Africa.
